Welcome to

Ali Cross

My training and long career as a professional dancer have given me deep insight into the art of movement, and an understanding that our bodies are constantly evolving and changing and that we have the ability to improve at whatever level we find ourselves at “today”.

My passion for Pilates was awakened after a knee injury which forced me to retire from dancing as a soloist in ballet companies in UK and Europe.

I retrained with BCPA and became a Master Pilates teacher.

I am constantly inquiring, questioning and learning as a teacher and strive to teach a more progressive Pilates in tune with the latest knowledge and understanding of neural pathways, the brain, pain, movement and wellbeing in its entirety.

My constant thirst for more knowledge led me to train over the years with some of the world’s finest movement professionals and also to train and teach in the GYROTONIC methodology which uses specialised machines designed around the human body to explore and expand our movement potential.

Over the years I have taught thousands of people, several of whom have gone on to become Pilates teachers in their own right. I consider it a privilege to continue learning from my clients past and present and I never lose the desire to help others move well.

Pilates at the Barn

What is Pilates and what can it do for me?

Pilates is a movement method based on physiology and science. In Pilates, the intention is to balance the body’s strength and flexibility in equal measures. The work starts by creating strength from within, to create a strong core and each subsequent movement we practice in class begins from that strong centre of the body. Pilates can be practiced by literally every body and at any age.

These are just some of the benefits you will gain with regular practice:

  • Injury prevention, Injury recovery
  • Better posture, Ease of movement
  • Better balance, Reduced back pain,
  • More flexibility, Improved gait
  • Less shoulder and neck pain
  • Toned muscles, Overall wellbeing

What will I need?

Please bring your own mat and wear comfortable gym clothing that you can move easily in. If you want to buy some small pieces of Pilates equipment at a later date I can help you source these.

Please wear clean socks.

Make sure you don’t eat a heavy meal before class and if necessary bring a little bottle of water with you to class.

It is wise to check with your doctor before starting a new form of exercise and always let me know before class if you have any pain anywhere.

General Etiquette:

  • Please do not attend class of you are feeling unwell.
  • Please turn your phones to silent.
  • Please ensure that you arrive for your class punctually, but no more than 10 mins early.

The Studio

The Barn is a beautiful and bespoke space dedicated to Pilates which gives you a hug as soon as you enter inside! – it offers both a relaxed atmosphere to work in but also a stimulating environment to perfect and hone our skills – using small equipment such as foam rollers, hand weights, resistance bands, poles, spiky balls and more to enhance, assist and challenge us during our classes.
